About us

The Neuroimaging Research Unit, part of the Department of Neurology, unites a diverse team of scientists passionate about advancing MRI research and technology. Our work thrives on collaboration across disciplines, bringing together expertise in mathematics, physics, chemistry, psychology, and biomedical engineering.

Mission statement

Our mission is to develop and apply advanced MRI techniques for the detailed characterization and modeling of brain and muscle tissue. By translating these methods into clinical settings, we aim to deepen the understanding of inflammatory and neurodegenerative brain diseases—such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)—as well as neuromuscular disorders. In addition, we provide cutting-edge MRI methodologies and expertise to support both in vivo and postmortem studies conducted by other research groups.

Research Retreat in Pörtschach am Wörthersee (Dec 2025)

Our team recently held a retreat in Pörtschach am Wörthersee, providing an inspiring setting for the kick-off of the WhatsMRI project. In addition to fruitful scientific discussions and intensive exchange on project goals and next steps, the retreat offered valuable opportunities to get to know each other better. Group-building activities, including hiking in the surrounding area, strengthened team cohesion and fostered collaboration. The combination of focused work, open dialogue, and the scenic lakeside environment set a strong foundation for the project ahead.
